HR as a Business Partner and Trusted Advisor

We as HR business professionals are always faced with being that true business partner and trusted advisor. We are often faced with partnering and executing. This session will discuss the importance of being a true business partner and the continued ability to be a trusted advisor to our clients, teams and the organization that we support. This session will discuss the concept of partnership, moving from a order taker to a true advisor and consulting as part of the partnership.
Speaker: DeRetta Cole, Ph.D., Vice President, Human Resources, First Data
DeRetta Cole is accountable for providing consultation on human capital and organizational development strategies for approximately 5000 First Data colleagues within the Financial Services Organization. This includes leading HR strategy within Financial Services, directing cross functional HR initiatives to support and influence functional, financial and operational objectives. In addition, she works to leverage the support of global HR teams across First Data to include; Compensation, Talent Acquisition, Talent Management, Employee Relations, Regional and Service Delivery to help lead change and drive organizational effectiveness and engagement. DeRetta joined First Data in March 2014.
Prior to joining First Data, DeRetta was Vice President of Human Resources for Turner Broadcasting System (TBS, Inc.) supporting Global Technology Operations. In that role, she was responsible for partnering with key executives in technology to create and implement key business initiatives as well as recommending human resources strategies to build individual and organizational capability. During her time at Turner, DeRetta held various roles within Corporate Human Resources and supported several clients such as; Finance and Accounting, Properties and Security and Legal. Before joining Turner, DeRetta held the role of Diversity Director (Inclusiveness and Flexibility Leader) for Ernst & Young and she was in previous HR leadership roles in the following organizations; ADP, HomeGrocer.com and YUM Brand.
DeRetta has 20 years of a progressive career in Human Resources that has spanned various industries to include hospitality, payroll, professional services and media. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Georgia in hotel/restaurant management, Masters of Business Administration from Clark Atlanta University and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Adult Education from University of Georgia. In addition, she has served on several boards and is currently a Board member of the Urban League of Greater Atlanta, co-chair of the Workforce Council for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Chair-Elect of Leadership Development MIG of the International Leadership Association.
