Georgia’s ‘Best Places’ to Work: How Did They Get There?

With over half of our lives spent at work, providing a positive work environment is paramount to productivity, retention, and numerous other Human Resources outcomes. Fortunately, Georgia is host to an array of the nation’s best places to work. 

With a panel of executive speakers from organizations like Alston & Bird, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Aflac, we will discuss the application process and selection criteria used in both the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Forbes "Best Place to Work" lists. We will highlight the organizations' accomplishments in their people practices, hone in on specific strategies and successes, and explore how functions outside the HR department (i.e., marketing, finance, etc.) contribute to reaching "Best Place to Work" status. Panelists will also discuss the ways "Best Place to Work" people practices have contributed to their organizations' strategic business goals. Participants will leave with ideas for contributing to their own organization's business goals through best in class people practices.

Tom Akins brings more than 20 years of consulting and business leadership experience to his client work and is highly valued for the unique set of perspectives he brings to client issues. Tom has extensive global consulting experience having deployed to both short-term and long-term assignments in North America, Central America, South America, Europe including Scandinavia, the Middle East, China, Asia/Pac and Australia.  He is often called upon by CEOs and other executives for individual and team coaching as well as organizational assessment and advisory services in leadership development, strategic planning, talent development, change management, succession planning, M&A and organizational design. 

Bob Eichenberg is the Greater Atlanta Market Human Resources leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers.  In this role, Bob is responsible for leading all aspects of human resources for PwC's 1,400+ professionals in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee.  Bob joined PwC in the San Jose, California office in 1995, where he focused on the technology industry and led the office campus recruiting efforts.  He also served as the West Region HR Leader for the Technology, Information/Communications and Entertainment Tax practice. Bob received a BS in Psychology from Santa Clara University and Masters Degree in Human Resources and Organizational Development from the University of Georgia.  Bob also hold his Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification.

Brenda J. Mullins is second vice president of Human Resources and diversity officer for Aflac Incorporated. Ms. Mullins oversees the Aflac Diversity Council and developed the framework for expanding Aflac’s diversity efforts through the Five R’s: recruitment, retention, relationships, reinforcement and recognition. She also coordinates human resources functions including Employee Appreciation Week and Celebrate Our Diversity Day events for all locations. In addition to Employee Advocacy and Diversity functions, she is responsible for Performance Management and Employee Relations Center of Expertise. Ms. Mullins is the former president and Chair of the Board for the Society of Human Resources (SHRM) Columbus, and has also served on the local boards of Goodwill, Ben & Jerry’s, Power Works Industries, Inc., and One Columbus.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in human resources management from Troy University and an Associate of Science degree in liberal arts from Columbus State University.

Linda Newman is Director of Employee Development for Alston & Bird LLP.  Alston & Bird is a large law firm headquartered in Atlanta and has been recognized by Fortune Magazine for the last ten years on its annual list of the “100 Best Companies To Work for in America.”  Alston & Bird has more than 1,800 lawyers and employees in nine offices including Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angles, New York, Raleigh, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.  Linda has been in her current position for 12 years and has more than 30 years of HR management experience.  In her role, Linda provides strategic direction for the firm’s customer service initiatives and the development programs for the Executive Staff.  With Linda’s contributions, the HR team has implemented and managed many programs that have brought Alston & Bird national recognition as an innovator in branding a level of customer service that is unique to law firms.  Linda graduated from Eastern Illinois University and worked as a paralegal for 5 years before transitioning into law firm management in Human Resources.  She is a frequent speaker on topics related to best practices in human resource management and cultivating great work environments.
