Team SHRM-Atlanta Volunteers with Back on My Feet

Posted By SHRM-Atlanta, Tuesday, November 26, 2019

On November 15th, 2019 Team SHRM-Atlanta members partnered with Back on My Feet to facilitate a Workforce Development workshop, “How to Keep a Job” for 15 of their members. Key themes and best practices shared were around Communication, Conflict Resolution, Time Management and Personal Branding. Attendees were excited to share the ways that they will be able to leverage their key learnings to thrive in their careers.

Thank you to SHRM-Atlanta member Kiley Buckner for introducing us to Back on My Feet. We appreciate you Heather Turton for your leadership and many thanks to Craig Southern and Tanzania Wiles for volunteering and sharing your wisdom with the attendees.

Being a part of “Team SHRM-Atlanta” allows our members the opportunity to share our HR knowledge and expertise with others in order to have a positive impact on their careers and lives.

We look forward to our continued partnership with Back on My Feet in 2020!

Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a national nonprofit that combats homelessness by using the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources. Our unique running-based model demonstrates that if you first restore confidence, strength, and self-esteem, individuals are better equipped to tackle the road ahead and move toward jobs, homes, and new lives. Our success is measured not only by the health impact of miles run, but also by how many individuals obtain education, employment, and housing. Over 70% of our members successfully move their lives forward through employment, education, or housing which translates to more than 7,000 jobs and homes. BoMF members enthusiastically strive to learn more and to prepare themselves for either returning to the workforce or improving their current position. Working with getting people transitioning out of homelessness a job may be different than when you were applying to work.

SHRM-Atlanta Members Volunteer at WorkSource Atlanta Job Readiness Event

A huge thank you to the 20 SHRM-Atlanta volunteers who came out to WorkSource Atlanta on Saturday, May 19th, to facilitate job readiness classes and conduct one-on-one mock interviews with youth residing within the city of Atlanta for WorkSource Atlanta's Summer Training and Youth Employment STEP Forward Program.

WorkSource Atlanta, the city of Atlanta’s workforce development agency, partners with local businesses to provide Atlanta’s in-school youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with summer internships and career exploration workshops to assist in post-graduation planning.

The workshops created and delivered by SHRM-Atlanta volunteers were instrumental in preparing the youth for their summer internships and equipping them with essential life skills. Classes facilitated were: How to Prepare a Resume, How to Ace the Interview and How to Keep A Job.

Feedback received by WorkSource Atlanta was that the favorite part of the day for the students was participating in one-on-one mock interviews with the SHRM-Atlanta volunteers. They felt that this process and the feedback that they received helped better prepare them for their upcoming interviews with future employers. SHRM-Atlanta volunteers assisted a total of 50 students, and we are proud to report that all 50 students received summer internships!

For more than a decade, SHRM-Atlanta has enjoyed the opportunity to use our HR skills and talents to benefit thousands of students through this amazing program in partnership with WorkSource Atlanta; we hope you’ll join us next year!
