SHRM-Atlanta's Rising Leaders community offers a variety of opportunities for young professionals to connect, learn, and have fun!

Conventional problem-solving is straightforward, but not always flexible, creative, or effective. What if the challenge recognized isn’t the real cause of the problem? What if the best efforts don’t lead to the best solution?
Instead of beginning with a problem, design thinking encourages slowing down and taking the time to understand the people involved and the challenge at hand.
“Design thinking taps into capacities we all have but that are overlooked by more conventional problem-solving practices. It is not only human-centered; it is deeply human in and of itself. Design thinking relies on our ability to be intuitive, to recognize patterns, to construct ideas that have emotional meaning as well as functionality, to express ourselves beyond words or symbols.”– Tim Brown, Change by Design, Introduction

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how Design Thinking methodology be leveraged as a problem-solving tool
  • Acquire knowledge of design thinking framework(s) to solve problems based on evidence
  • Practice creating a wide number of potential solutions and then narrowing those down to a “best fit” solution

**Please note: this event is for HR professionals that are 35 years or younger only.

Rising Leaders are also encouraged to participate in all SHRM-Atlanta events! Visit the Calendar of Events to see all upcoming SHRM-Atlanta events and to register.

Featured Speaker

Austin Schiffer

Austin Schiffer graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Informatics and a Master of Science degree in Human-Computer Interaction + Design.

Raised in Atlanta, Austin moved back in 2018 to accept a position as a UX researcher for OneSpring, a leading human-centered design firm. With a global customer base, OneSpring helps its clients design software and digital solutions that their clients love using. Prior to OneSpring, Austin was a User Experience Designer at Allegro Management Company in New York City.

In both his university and career roles, Austin has been a leader of key components of Design Thinking. His experience includes developing key audience personas based on qualitative and quantitative data to help frame and guide marketing efforts; leading and conducting user interviews and research activities to identify and improve business processes, software, architecture, and navigation; and prototyping high-fidelity wireframes to enhance user experience.

Austin has been a participant in several industry and university Design Workshops similar to the one he is leading today for SHRM-Atlanta's Rising Leaders. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how to employ Design Thinking to solve HR challenges with a more human-centric perspective. You’ll also participate in hands-on exercises that will help you visually represent solutions. Your perspective as an HR leader will forever be changed as you focus on the human aspect in every realm that Human Resources touches.
